Bill Pyle will present a slideshow with identification tips on the Winter Birds of Kodiak. The event will be held at Kodiak College, in the Benny Benson Building, Room 106. Join us at 5:30 p.m. to sign up for this year’s Christmas Bird Count. Door prizes will be given away beginning at 5:45 p.m., and the talk will begin at 6:00 p.m.

This is a wonderful opportunity to sharpen your skills for the 2025 counts.

Great Backyard Bird Count 2025:

Kodiak Audubon Society Birding Challenge

Objective: To encourage community members to observe and report bird species during the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) using eBird. Birders of all skill and mobility levels are welcome to participate.

Challenge Period: February 14-February 17 2025

Categories:

1. The Species Sweepstakes (Most Species Observed):

• Participants submit their eBird Trip Reports for the GBBC period.

• The winner is determined by the highest number of unique bird species observed.

• Tiebreaker: If a tie occurs, the winner will be determined by the highest number of checklists submitted.

• Prize: $25 gift certificate to the restaurant of their choice or a copy of Gulls Simplified

2. The Backyard Bird Bonanza (Most Backyard Birds):

• Participants submit eBird Trip Reports focusing on birds observed in their own backyards or immediate surroundings.

• The winner is determined by the highest number of unique bird species observed in the backyard category.

• Tiebreaker: If a tie occurs, the winner will be determined by the highest number of checklists submitted for the backyard category.

• Prize: $25 gift certificate to the restaurant of their choice or a copy of Backyard Bird Chronicles

3. The First Flight Award (New Birder Challenge):

• This category is for individuals who are new to birding and or eBird. New is considered birding for 2 years or less.

• Participants submit their eBird Trip Reports for the GBBC period.

• Winners are determined by a combination of factors:

• Completion of eBird Essentials Course (an extra ticket into the drawing)

• Quality of eBird checklist submissions (including completeness, accuracy, and adherence to eBird guidelines)

• Prize: $25 gift certificate to the restaurant of their choice or a copy of The Birdwatcher Answer Book

Rules:

• To register, participants set up their eBird Trip Reports before February 14 and submit their shared link to kodiakaudubon@gmail.com
• Name your Trip Report with the category you would like to enter, your name, and Kodiak GBBC (e.g. Sweepstakes-Trussell-Kodiak GBBC or Backyard-Trussell-Kodiak GBBC)
• Go birding on any or all days during the GBBC (February 14-17)
• All birds seen, heard or photographed that are entered into eBird on the 14th, 15th, 16th, or 17th count towards your total.
• All checklists must be submitted according to eBird's guidelines for accurate and ethical birding. If you are unsure or want a refresher, there is an eBird Essentials course through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that is free and really wonderful.
• Participants shall submit all of their checklists from the four days by February 18th to be eligible to win.
• Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category in a social Zoom Round-Up.

Tips for Participants:

• Plan your birding outings: Explore different habitats in your area.

• Keep detailed records: Note the date, time, location, and any relevant observations in your eBird checklists.

• Utilize eBird features: Explore the "Explore" section of eBird to learn about local birds and plan your birding routes.

• Be patient and observant: Take your time and enjoy the process of birdwatching.

• New Birders: Don't be afraid to ask questions! Connect with experienced birders for guidance and support.

How to Make a Trip Report

1. Go to https://ebird.org/mytripreports.

Reports must be created on a computer, but all of the data entered using your eBird mobile will be pulled into your Trip Report.

If you already have an eBird account please use the same username and password for submitting your bird(s) for the Great Backyard Bird Count.

If you have previously participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count, submitted to eBird, saved a bird with Merlin Bird ID, or participated in Project FeederWatch, NestWatch, Celebrate Urban Birds, etc., you have an existing account. If you don’t remember your username or password, you can recover or reset them when logging in to the app or on this screen. 

1. Select Create Trip Report.

2. Give the report a descriptive name (e.g., “GBBC 2025 Trussell”).

3. Set the dates of the report to the 4-day count (e.g.,14-17, Feb 2025).

Now automatically when you add a bird eBird mobile during this window of time, the observations will drop into your Trip Report.

1. Choose your privacy settings as either Link-only or Public:

Use “Link-only” if you only want your report visible to people who have the link. 

“Link-only” and “Public” are currently very similar. The primary difference is that Public Trip Reports can be found via search engines like Google.

Kodiak Audubon’s annual membership meeting and Winter Birds presentation are on Friday, December 6, 2024. Robin Corcoran will present a slideshow with identification tips on the Winter Birds of Kodiak. The event will be held at Kodiak College in the Benny Benson Building.

Join us at 6:30 p.m. to renew your membership and sign up for this year’s Christmas Bird Count. Door prizes will be given away beginning at 6:45 p.m., and the talk will begin at 7:00 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to sharpen your skills for the 2024 counts.

Birding, Photography, and Breakfast Fall 2023

Join Kodiak Audubon Society and Kodiak Camera Club on October 28th at Potatopatch Lake Duck Deck. Stop by anytime between 10:00 and 11:30 a.m. We will pack up at noon.

We will have spotting scopes, tripod legs, binoculars, and camera gear for you to look through and ask questions about. There will not be a formal presentation, but it is a wonderful opportunity to ask questions about getting good photos. Look through a variety of spotting scopes before you decide to purchase.

We will also provide warm beverages and breakfast snacks such as quiche, scones, and muffins.

We invite folks to come to build bird feeders with us from 10:30-11:45 am. We have kits and seeds to send you home with.  Then, at noon, we plan to move into Room 106 to meet Marissa Trombley from the Alaska Bird Treatment and Learning Center and find out all kinds of things about her amazing feather friend "Breland," the Peregrine Falcon.

The Return of Birding and Breakfast with Kodiak Audubon Society

 Its been since the Fall of 2019 that we have hosted a Birding and Breakfast event. 

Come join Kodiak Audubon for a light breakfast and birding from the duck deck on Potato Patch Lake. Join experts from Kodiak Audubon at this special event dedicated to birding and optics for outdoor enthusiasts.

This event will be an amazing opportunity to sample binoculars, spotting scopes, and tripods. Best of all, the event is FREE! 

Everyone who enjoys the outdoors is welcome: Bird Watchers, sportsmen and women, hikers, campers, and photographers.

Meet Lisa and Chandelle from the Alaska Bird Treatment and Learning Center and learn all kinds of things about his amazing feathered friends Qanaxsix, the Bald Eagle, and Girdie, the American Crow. 

Lisa will present Qanaxsix for the first 15 mins, and then Chandelle will present Girdie for 15 mins. A Question and answer session will follow.

As with so many things this year, we could not hold many of our normal events such as Birding and Breakfast at the duck deck or our booth at the AAUW Bazaar, but we will still host our annual Winter Birds of Kodiak.  

This year it will be presented virtually by both Rich MacIntosh and Robin Corcoran on Friday, December 11th at 6:30 pm over Zoom. You will need to register in advance for this meeting. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. 

As this is also our annual membership meeting we have set up a way for members to renew online and to shop for some of our Kodiak Audubon merchandise. Active members (by Thursday, December 10th) who attend the presentation will be entered into a door prize drawing for several Kodiak Audubon goodies.

 

10 Beaches and Birding Challenge - Join us at any time

10 BEACHES AND BIRDING CHALLENGE

Since large group activities are not possible this year, we are offering Kodiak a 10 Beaches & Birding Challenge to encourage families and others to visit Kodiak’s beaches and look for our feathered friends throughout the summer. 

The challenge is to see one unique bird at each of the 10 Kodiak beaches. The challenge runs from May 16th to Sept 7th, 2020. 

Audubon will provide participants with a packet that contains a guide with the 10 beach locations and photos birds that are seen in the summer in Kodiak. Also, each kit will have a notebook/passport to record information about each bird, and a Beaches and Birding sticker.

Anyone who finishes the challenge will receive a bird feeder kit to put together and put up in your yard for fall and winter.

Join us virtually from the comfort of your own home with a cup of coffee while Jill shares the work she has been doing here in Kodiak that fits in nicely with the 2020 WMBD conservation theme, Birds Connect Our World, because it focuses on the tracking technologies used to explore the routes of migratory birds across the globe, and how this knowledge is used to inform conservation.
